South St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News)- Emergency responders are at the scene of a home explosion and fire in the Twin Cities

A news release issued by the South St. Paul Police Department and South Metro Fire Department says first responders were dispatched to the report of a home explosion around 6:20 Thursday morning.

The first crews to arrive at the South St. Paul residence found the home was engulfed in flames and had suffered significant structural damage. As firefighters fought the fire, they located a deceased person inside of the home.

The victim’s name, age and gender is unknown as of Thursday afternoon. Their body has been sent to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. 

Officials say the cause of the fire and explosion as well as the cause and manner of death of the victim are under investigation. Crews plan to remain on the scene to continue fire extinguishing efforts and investigative activities.

The Kiwanis Holiday Light Display is free to the public but cash and non-perishable food donations are accepted. All money collected is given to area non-profits. Since opening in 2012 the event has raised more than $500,000 for local charities.
