Suspected of Killer of Iowa Police Officer Captured in Southern Minnesota (Update)
Algona, IA (KROC-AM News)- Authorities say a man suspected of shooting and killing an Iowa police officer has been captured in Minnesota.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation issued a Blue Alert around midnight Thursday. A Blue Alert is issued when a subject goes on the run after harming law enforcement.
The alert came about four hours after the shooting was reported in a residential area in the north-central Iowa community of Algona, which is about 35 miles south of the Minnesota-Iowa border. Authorities also issued a shelter in place order for the town.
The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Kyle Lou Ricke of Algona, fled the town of just over 5,400 people after opening fire on the officer, authorities say. After the reported shooting Ricke feld north to southern Minnesota.
Brown County jail records indicate he was booked into the southern Minnesota County’s jail shortly before 4:15 Thursday morning. He was booked under suspicion of being a fugitive from justice.
The slain officer has been identified as Kevin Cram. The Algona police officer was 33 years old. Tributes for the fallen officer are pouring in from law enforcement agencies across Iowa.
