Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- Two people were taken to a hospital following a fire at a Rochester duplex Thursday afternoon.

A news release issued by the Rochester Fire Department says crews responded to the blaze shortly after 5:15 p.m. Upon arrival firefighters found a smoke-filled house and a heavy fire on the south side of the duplex. 

Firefighters extinguished flames from the outside of the home in the 2100 block of 42nd St. Northwest. Crews then extinguished remaining hotspots.

The news release says no one was found inside of the home, however two people were transported from the scene to St. Mary’s Hospital for further evaluation. The cause of the fire is unknown as of Friday morning.

A damage estimate is not yet available, however officials say one unit of the duplex suffered major fire and smoke damage and the other unit suffered minor smoke and fire damage.

The Rochester Fire Department reminds homeowners to ensure they have working smoke detectors and to call 911 as soon as it’s safe to do so in the event of a fire. Mayo Clinic Ambulance, Rochester Police Department, Rochester Public Utilities also responded to the fire call.
