Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)  Seasonal factors helped push the unemployment rate in the Rochester area higher in January but it remained lower than it was a year ago.

The latest jobs statistics from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development put the jobless rate for Olmsted County during the first month of the year at 2.5%. That was up from the 2.2% rate reported for December, but it was also two-tenths of a percentage point below the unemployment rate from January 2022.

Across the region, every county in southeastern Minnesota reported higher unemployment rates in January. Fillmore County had the highest jobless rate in the region at 4.2%. That county also experienced the largest increase in the region with its unemployment rate rising more than a full percentage point from December of last year. Olmsted County had the lowest rate in the region.
