Women’s Shelter and Support Center have teamed up with the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women for a statewide day of action, “Minnesota Leads the Way in Taking Action to End Domestic Violence.”

"The Women's Shelter in Rochester is the only domestic violence shelter in 10 counties in Southeastern Minnesota," said Terri Allred, Director of Community Engagement at the Women's Shelter. "It is vital for us to educate our community about the impact of domestic violence."

Women’s Shelter and Support Center will host a Noon rally on March 27 at Olmsted Government Center Rotunda. Rally attendees will contact their state legislators to support essential funding bills to support survivors and domestic violence services. Advocates are asking elected officials to support Domestic Abuse Transformation programs at $5 million a year. These programs aim to change the behaviors of perpetrators of domestic violence to protect victims from further harm.

“Minnesota has a long history of leading the work to end domestic violence. Supporting funding for programming to transform perpetrator behavior and investing in prevention programming demonstrates Minnesota’s continuing leadership in the field of domestic violence,” said Liz Richards, executive director of the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women. “We are excited to join the leaders from Rochester and surrounding communities and move forward the work to end domestic violence”.

Speakers at Women’s Shelter and Support Center’s rally will include Kim Norton, Mayor, Gail Sauter, Interim President of Women’s Shelter and Kelly Classic, Interim Executive Director of Women’s Shelter. The rally in Rochester will occur on the same day advocates gather for a rally in the Capitol rotunda in Saint Paul
