Last year was an interesting winter.  As we ventured into November, I was confident that this was my winter where I was going to conquer my teenager and his denial of wearing a coat.  I bought all of the necessary winter gear to stay warm AND was determined to make him wear it.  And then...we had quite a few 50 degree weather days...in Minnesota...during the winter.

Mother Nature decided to do her own thing in 2023 and set me up to fail as a mom.

What are the odds that she will be bringing us a white Christmas in 2024?

Do you think we will have a white Christmas in 2024?

It's a serious question that quite a few of us in Minnesota are asking right now.  2023 was a bit of a bummer for those who love snow.

For hockey lovers, the chance to skate on an outdoor rink is a huge thrill during the winter season.  Unfortunately, several outdoor ice rinks throughout Minnesota had an extremely short time frame where they were usable in 2023 due to the warmer-than-normal temperatures.  Minneapolis just announced that due to the trend of warmer winters, five of their outdoor ice rinks are closing permanently.

But there is some good news that popped up recently too.  According to NOAA, our Minnesota winter in 2024 might actually look like a typical winter.

But what about that white Christmas?

How Many Times Have We Had a Christmas Without Snow in Minnesota?

I feel like the radio station that I'm on has already brought some good luck to Minnesota.  Just the other day, Y-105FM had some help with some celebrities as the flip was made to 24/7 Christmas!  Less than 24 hours later, snow was falling from the sky.

If you hate winter weather, sorry...you can blame me for that white fluffy stuff sitting on our ground right now.  Will it stay though?  Probably not, but based on some historical information from the US National Weather Service, a white Christmas could be in our future.

Last year, the US National Weather Service Twin Cities Minnesota shared an infographic that shows all of the times the Minneapolis - St. Paul area has had a white Christmas.  Ok...not ALL of the times but the data they presented does go back to 1953.

The Chance For A White Christmas Varies Throughout the Entire State of Minnesota

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, there are a few areas of Minnesota where a white Christmas is basically guaranteed.  If you shouted out "Northern Minnesota" for that statement, you are correct.  Almost all of Northern Minnesota has a 90-100% of experiencing a white Christmas.

Drop down to the Twin Cities area and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says the chance of a white Christmas falls to about 71%.

If you need a visual, NOAA created a great graphic that shows the chance of a white Christmas for all of the United States.  Based on the data they used to create the image, it appears that the lower portion of Minnesota, including Rochester, has a 60-75% chance of a white Christmas.
