The Council President Position is one of four seats on the council that are on the ballot for this fall’s election. The other seats are for wards two, four, and six.

Three of the four seats will be filled by someone new. Current City Council President Brooke Carlson and Ward Two Councilman Mark Bransford both announced earlier this year that they are not seeking second terms.

Schubring has said he’s taken a leave of absence from the role at Mayo Clinic since entering the race and says he’ll resign from the Mayo Clinic post if he wins the seat.

Schubring is facing Current Fifth Ward Councilmember Shaun Palmer in the General Election.

Norton’s statement mentions Palmer by name, pointing out he would still represent the residents of the city’s fifth ward on the council for two more years if Schubring were to win the seat. Norton wrote that she looks forward to “serving with him in that capacity.”

Palmer won the most votes of the three candidates who were on the ballot in the August Primary, taking 45% of the votes compared to Schubring's 43%.

General Election Day is November 5. Early voting is already underway in Minnesota.
