23 Years Since Death of SE Minnesota Trooper That Prompted New Traffic Law
Undated (KROC-AM News)- Emergency responders in southeast Minnesota and around the state are recognizing the anniversary of a State Trooper who lost his life in the line of duty in southeast Minnesota.
The anniversary of the death of Cpl. Ted Foss is now known as Ted Foss Move Over Enforcement and Education Day. Thursday marks the 23rd anniversary of the death of Trooper Ted Foss.
He was fatally struck by a motorist while conducting a traffic stop on the shoulder of I-90 in Winona County on August 21, 2000. In response to his death, Minnesota lawmakers enacted the Trooper Ted Foss Move Over Law.
The law requires motorists to put a lane between them and an emergency vehicle on the side of the road if possible. It also requires drivers to slow down if they’re traveling on a two lane road and encounter an emergency vehicle on the shoulder. The fine for violating the law can be over $100.
Earlier this year state lawmakers expanded the law. Now drivers are also required to move over or slow down for a stalled vehicle on the side of the road if at least one person is visibly present outside of the vehicle.
