Undated ( KROC AM News ) - Most of Minnesota woke up in the deep freeze Thursday morning, especially northern areas of the state.

The National Weather Service says numerous cities in the northeastern part of the state reported morning low temperatures of -30 or colder.The coldest reading came from near the town of Cotton at -39.Brimson reported a low of -37 and Embarrass was close behind at -36.  Dozens of other cities reported overnight lows in the minus 20’s.

In southeast Minnesota, lows ranged from the single digits below zero to the minus teens. The lowest temperature reported to the Weather Service was -18 at a site four miles north of Byron.

Rochester’s unofficial low at the airport was -12, missing the record for the date by just 5 degrees.The low at the St. Mary’s helipad was -6.

A talked-about warmup appears to be on the way as temperatures will finally rise above freezing, which will end Rochester’s streak of below normal temperatures.The streak reached 23 days Thursday. Forecasts call for temperatures in the 40’s next week.
