Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A detour that had been in place in the eastern half of Rochester for six of the past nine months has come to an end.

Work began last July and resumed this Spring. 

The intersection was open this past Winter. Motorists were using temporary pavement to navigate the busy intersection. 

4th St. and 19th Ave. SE Roundabout Project Completed, Intersection Reopens

Construction crews have completed a project to change the former four-way intersection of 4th St. SE and 19th Ave. SE near Olmsted Medical Center, the Federal Medical Center and the Rochester Community and Technical College Heintz Center.

The $3.6 million project was originally scheduled to be completed last November, however “unanticipated soil conditions” caused delays in utility work that pushed back the project’s completion date, according to the Rochester Department of Public Works.

An estimated 14,800 vehicles per day pass through the intersection, according to the City of Rochester. Officials also indicated the intersection’s prior design contributed to nine crashes from 2015 to 2022. 

4th St. SE Closure Coming This Month

Motorists who use 4th St. SE to enter and exit downtown Rochester will soon have another detour as part of their commute. 

4th St. SE is set to close on June 8 from the roundabout to 16th Ave. SE to accommodate a Sanitary Sewer Maintenance Project. 

That project is scheduled to wrap up by June 19.
