Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Southeast Minnesota was slammed by a slow-moving winter storm Sunday that produced periods of wet snow through early Monday.

Totals reported to the National Weather Service were generally in the 4 - 8 inch range with nearly 9 inches in Winona County. Weather spotters in the Oronoco and Hammond areas reported 10 ½ inches. Rochester’s official total measured at the airport through midnight was 7.4 inches. That is one of the highest daily totals for the month of March in city history. Another half an inch fell there after midnight for an unofficial storm total of 7.9 inches.

The snow affected the morning commute and Rochester and other school districts either cancelled classes or decided to open two hours late. There could be more snow Tuesday - Thursday, although nothing significant is expected.

The storm may have played a role in the death of a man found unresponsive in the driveway of a Rochester residence early Monday. First responders were called to the residence in the 5200 block of Kingston Place NW around 5:20 a.m. and found the man next to a shovel. Efforts to revive him were not successful. Police Captain John Sherwin says the death is not suspicious and an autopsy will be done to determine how the 51 year old man died.
