Austin Woman Admits to Murder Charges For 2 Overdose Deaths
Austin, MN (KROC-AM News) - An Austin woman has admitted to murder charges stemming from two fatal drug overdoses in Austin last year.
43-year-old Yashica Thomas entered guilty pleas today in Mower County Court to two counts of third-degree murder through a plea deal. In exchange, prosecutors dismissed four felony drug charges connected to a drug raid at a residence near an Austin park last August.
The third-degree murder charges are linked to the drug overdose death of a 23-year-old Austin man last March and another deadly drug overdose that claimed the life of a 22-year-old Austin woman in May of last year. In both cases, investigators uncovered evidence that Thomas was the source of fatal doses of fentanyl blamed for both deaths.
The criminal complaints in the two cases state that Thomas admitted to investigators that she had sold the overdose victims fentanyl. She indicated that she needed the money to support her own drug habit and "make a little extra money."
The judge in the case ordered a presentence investigation on Thomas. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 9th.
