The Best Hiking Trails in Southeastern Minnesota
Think you’ve seen the best of southeastern Minnesota?
Between the bluffs, river valleys, and winding forest trails, this part of the state quietly delivers some of the most underrated hiking views in Minnesota. The kind that make you stop mid-trail and say, “Okay… wow.”
Here in Rochester, we’re lucky to have more than 85 miles of walking and biking trails throughout the city, but if you’re ready to venture beyond the usual neighborhood paths, these spots deserve a spot on your list.
If you want views, this is your place.
The Bluff Side Trail is a fun challenge with wooden stairs, switchbacks, and steep climbs, but the payoff? Unreal. You’ll climb 430 feet above Lake Pepin and get panoramic views that feel straight out of a postcard.
It’s also one of the best bird migration viewing spots in the country this time of year. Eagles, hawks, songbirds, absolutely stunning.
Located near Hastings and overlooking the St. Croix River, Afton feels like a mini getaway without leaving the state.
The rolling prairie trails, wooded paths, river views, it’s all there. You can hike, horseback ride, backpack camp, or just soak up the scenery. There’s even a swimming beach.
If you’re looking for a challenge, this is it.
Climbing to the top of this 340-foot bluff will test your legs, but the view of the Mississippi River on one side and the city of Red Wing on the other is absolutely worth it.
It’s short, steep, and satisfying. And you will feel accomplished at the top.
Whitewater is pure nostalgia for me. It was one of my favorite field trip destinations as a kid, and it still holds up.
With more than 2,700 acres near Altura, you’ve got hiking, camping, fishing, swimming, and some of the most beautiful bluff country scenery in the state.
Tucked near Plainview, Carley is quiet, scenic, and perfect if you’re looking to unplug.
The North Branch of the Whitewater River winds through a wooded valley, and in the spring, the bluebells create a carpet of color that people drive from all over to see.

If bluff-top views are your thing, this park overlooking the Mississippi River is a must. Wide-open vistas, dramatic cliffs, and incredible sunsets.
Another challenging one for the avid hikers with early 600 steep steps that lead you to sweeping river views. It’s short but intense… and unforgettable.
