In August the chamber announced its support for a ballot item asking voters to decide on extending the city’s half-cent sales tax.

The chamber has partnered with the city to hold several informational sessions on the ballot measure since announcing its support.

Last week the chamber announced its support for a $10 million technology referendum for the Rochester Public School District. The technology initiatives include security upgrades to the district’s school buildings and security upgrades for its computer networks, along with the purchase of computers and tablets for students and teachers.

“The technology referendum will positively impact the ability of Rochester Public Schools to prepare students for their future careers.” said Chamber President Ryan Parsons. “Investments today in resources that can encourage career success in the future is a valuable opportunity for both students and employers.” Chamber Board Chair Scott Eggert said in a statement, “Rochester is a growing community, and the technology referendum is an investment in education that will ensure we are competitive amongst other Minnesota communities and are supporting our students.”

The levy would also provide about $3 million per year for the planned technology upgrades. Documentation supplied to the School board estimates the technology levy would increase the annual property tax payment for the owner of a $325,000 home by about $135.

Voters will decide on whether or not to approve the funding increase for the Rochester School District as well as the extension of the city’s sales tax on November 7. Absentee voting on the two items is underway in Olmsted County.
