CHICAGO (AP) — Jose Quintana struck out a career-high 13, Alexei Ramirez homered and the Chicago White Sox

beat the Minnesota Twins 5-1 in the opener of a doubleheader Saturday.

Quintana (8-10) allowed a run and two walks in seven innings.

Phil Hughes had a career-high 11 strikeouts, and he became the first Twins pitcher to have double-digit strikeouts in an outing since Francisco Liriano on July 18, 2012, against Baltimore.

Hughes (15-10) allowed five runs — three earned — in seven innings.

The Twins struck out 17 times while the White Sox fanned 12 times.

Ramirez had two hits. His two-run shot in the third opened the scoring. Carlos Sanchez scored on Ramirez's 15th homer after reaching on first baseman Joe Mauer's fielding error. Ramirez was 4 for 20 in his career against Hughes before connecting.
