Convictions Tied to Police Shooting Put Rochester Man in Prison
Hibbing, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester man has been sentenced to 10-years in prison for convictions stemming from a police-involved shooting on Minnesota’s Iron Range last year.
25-year-old Che Jones previously entered Norgaard pleas to first and second-degree assault charges and another felony count for being an ineligible person in possession of a gun. The plea means Jones admits guilt but doesn’t remember his actions because of intoxication. Court documents indicate tests put his blood-alcohol-concentration at nearly four-times the legal limit for driving after he was rushed to a hospital in critical condition after being shot by two Hibbing Police officers.
The charges against Jones alleged he was shot by the officers after he fired a gun at while being pursued on foot in the early afternoon on January 13, 2017. The officers indicated they responded to reports of an altercation and found Jones holding a gun and standing next to the victim of an assault.
The prosecution of his case was delayed for months while Jones was recuperating from the gunshot wounds to his chest, cheek, and arm.
He was originally charged with attempted murder, but that charge and another first-degree assault charge were thrown out by the judge in the case after he ruled there wasn’t enough evidence to prove Jones was actually shooting at the officers.
