If you've been to Costco in Rochester in the past month or so, have you noticed anything new? I've experienced a couple of times first hand, and let me tell you, it's pretty slick.

Costco just made the announcement of this new tech on their second-quarter earnings call: their new pre-scan checkout.

Costco's New Pre-Scan Checkout System

I thought that a month ago or whenever I first experienced it, that this was new across the country, but I'm thinking Rochester may have been one of the first to get it if people are just now learning about it.

So this pre-scan checkout is really nice and you don't have to do anything extra.

How Costco's Pre-Scan Checkout Works

When you get in line at Costco, an employee may come up to you with a tiny litter scanner. They'll scan your Costco Membership Card, and then scan all of your items while you're standing in line.

Then, when you get to the register, all of your items are already scanned, the cashier just needs to scan your Membership Card and boom, everything auto-populates. Isn't that nice?!

This is in an effort to cut down lines at Costco, which has been a sore spot for customers for a long time. Delish writes that on the earnings call, Costco CFO Gary Millerchip said,

“'Early results show this is improving the flow of traffic, and we have received great member feedback.'"

He also said that the average checkout time now is only 8 seconds!

I wonder if they'll ever adopt the Scan and Go system that Sam's Club has, where you scan your items yourself as you shop and then pay on your phone. Now THAT would be nice.
