The Olmsted County Board holds its first meeting of the year Tuesday and is scheduled to make two significant decisions.

One is acting on a proposal for a project that calls for an expansion of the Government Center and the construction of a weapons screening area on the building’s second floor. Staff is recommending the project be awarded to the Kraus Anderson construction company, which submitted a proposal that has a cost of just under $11.3 million. Staff says adjustments are being considered that could lower the cost by as much as $200,000.

The board is also being asked to approve the creation of a new position to accommodate former sheriff Dave Mueller. State law requires the county to offer Mueller a job that is comparable to the one he held before he was elected sheriff four years ago, which was department head. Since there are no existing openings for a department head, County Administrator Richard Devlin is recommending the approval of a new position - director of the Department of Data Practices, Staff Development and Intergovernmental Relations.

The starting salary will be $123,000, which is about $21,000 less than what Mueller was paid as sheriff last year.
