Orr, MN (MinnesotaNow)- One person was killed and three others were injured following a boating accident on a northern Minnesota lake.

Preliminary reports indicated numerous people were thrown from the boats into the frigid water.

A news release issued by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says first responders were dispatched to the incident shortly before 6:30 Tuesday evening.

One Killed, Three Injured in Boating Accident on Lake Vermilion

The deadly accident happened on Lake Vermilion, which is about 27 miles north of Virginia. It occurred near Manbeck Island.

The island near the crash scene is on the northwestern part of the large lake. 

The person who lost their life was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving actions from first responders.

Their name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. 

Injured Boater Airlifted

Authorities say one of the three injured people was airlifted to a hospital in Duluth. The two others were transported by ambulance.

Their names have not been released. The deadly accident is under investigation.
