The effects of a weekend snowstorm which dumped nearly 20 inches of snow on the Duluth area are still being felt. The city of Duluth sent a press release that explained their most famous landmark is temporarily out of commission, "Lift Bridge operations have temporarily closed due to weight from ice." The press release explained that the bridge is not broken, but can't currently operate due to ice build-up from the storm. De-icing operations are scheduled to begin Tuesday to melt the ice and get the bridge back in working order.Crews will begin de-icing the bridge today, but it is not known when it will be operational again.

In the meantime, the Duluth News Tribune says ships are being re-routed to the Superior entry. The newspaper spoke to the Duluth Seaway Port Authority which explained, "Using the Superior entry will require vessel captains to be extra cautious because of shallow waters and the reroute could equate to higher costs due to the additional time required."
