Ethanol Leaks From Train Wreck Near Alma, Wisconsin

ALMA, Wis. (AP) — BNSF Railway says five tanker cars that were part of a train derailment in western Wisconsin are leaking ethanol into the Mississippi River.

The railroad says the train derailed about 8:45 a.m. Saturday about 2 miles north of Alma, a town along the Mississippi. BNSF says some of the 25 derailed cars were empty auto racks and tanker cars carrying denatured alcohol, also known as ethanol.

BNSF says the railroad is working to contain the spill, but it didn't say how much ethanol has leaked so far. The railroad says there is no threat to the public.

A Buffalo County dispatcher says a voluntary evacuation was lifted at about 2 p.m. Saturday.

BNSF says there are no reports of fire, smoke or injuries. The Federal Railroad Administration will investigate.
