Fleeing Motorist Killed in Crash Early Sunday in West St. Paul
West St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The driver of a vehicle being chased by police officers in the Twin Cities was killed in a crash early Sunday.
A news release from the West St. Paul Police Department says the police pursuit that led to the fatality began with a report of a domestic disturbance around 1:45 AM Sunday. The statement says a female caller reported that a 35-year-old man was threatening people and damaging property inside a home.
The law enforcement dispatcher who took the call was also told the man had consumed a large amount of alcohol and used drugs. The news release also indicates the dispatcher could hear a man yelling and what sounded like items being thrown.
West St. Paul Police say officers later spotted a vehicle connected to the domestic disturbance call and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver fled. Moments later and a few blocks away, the vehicle was seen crossing Robert Street, where the driver lost control and smashed into a power pole and two unoccupied vehicles.
Officials say the driver to him miles was ejected in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.
The deadly crash is being investigated by the Minnesota State Patrol and the Mendota Heights Police Department.
