Hutchinson, MN (MNN News) - Educators and political opponents are slamming Republican candidate for governor Scott Jensen for spreading a debunked rumor about litter boxes in Minnesota schools for "furries" -- students who identify with animals and sometimes dress in fur suits.

Jensen was speaking to supporters in Hutchinson when he said, "Why are we telling elementary kids that they get to choose their gender this week? Why do we have litter boxes in some of the school districts so kids can pee in them because they identify as a 'furry'? We've lost our minds!"

Education Minnesota teachers union President Denise Specht says candidates should talk about issues like the staffing shortage and mental health crisis. "What I'm *not* expecting from leaders right now is perpetuating hoaxes. I hope our leaders can tell fact from fiction.... and Scott Jensen has simply failed that test,"

Jensen's campaign declined to comment.
