Former Canton City Clerk Charged With Embezzlement
Canton, MN (KROC-AM News) - The former City Clerk and Treasurer for a small town in Fillmore County is facing embezzlement and felony theft charges.
The City of Canton issued a statement today confirming reports that 52-year-old Lolitta Melander has been accused of stealing almost $135,000 in city funds over the past 8 years. Melander resigned back in March after the city's annual audit revealed concerns and led to a criminal investigation by the Fillmore County Sheriff's Department and the Office of the State Auditor.
That investigation was completed in mid-October and led to the filing of criminal charges against Melander. The statement says some of the misappropriated funds have been recovered but the City of Canton intends to seek full restitution.
