Freaky February Warmth Prompts MN DNR to Close Roads and Trails
St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The unusually warm temperatures that have dominated Minnesota's weather scene this February are expected to force the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to temporarily close some roads and trails.
The DNR today advised that roads and motorized trails in state forests, state parks, recreation areas, and wildlife management areas are likely to close earlier than usual due to muddy conditions. The news release indicates some of the roads and trails have already been closed to protect them from damage.
“These springlike thaws create wet, unstable road and trail conditions. Closures protect our roads and trails from damage and costly repair, and also keep people and equipment safe, too,” said Matt Huseby, roads coordinator for the DNR’s Forestry Division. “Be sure to know before you go. Check the DNR website for updates, obey the closures, and use good judgement wherever you ride.”
The DNR says anyone planning to head into the woods should check the agency's website first. The advisory says State Forest road and trail closures are listed individually on the website, which also lists vehicle weight restrictions for other roads and trails that remain open.
The information on the closures will be updated each Thursday afternoon. The DNR will also be posting signs at entry points and parking lots to inform people seeking to enjoy the outdoors, especially with the warmer weather. The information will also be available by calling 888-646-6367 (8 AM-6 PM on weekdays and 8 AM-4:30 PM on Saturdays).
