Nov. 14, 2014

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Rachael Bona (Coon Rapids, Minn.) led the Gophers with three points as the No. 2 Minnesota women's hockey team defeated Ohio State, 4-2, at OSU Ice Rink Friday evening.

Minnesota (8-2-1, 6-1-2-0 WCHA) received two points from sophomore Kate Schipper (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) on one goal and one assist in addition to Bona's third multi-point effort of the season.

"This was a really good win on the road here against a very good opponent in Ohio State," head coach Brad Frost said. "We've talked for the last couple weeks about needing to generate some secondary scoring, and it was great to see Bona get on the board here tonight, along with Lorence, Menefee and Schipper, who got her first one of the year."

Ohio State (7-5-0, 5-4-0-0 WCHA) was led by senior Taylor Kuehl, who scored both goals for the Buckeyes, and freshman goaltender Kassidy Sauve, who made 40 saves in the loss.

The Gophers were two-for-six with eight shots on the power play while holding OSU to two-for-four with the man advantage.

"Our power play was really good for us tonight," Frost said. "We need to stay out of the box a little more than we did, giving up those two PK goals, but overall it was a really solid game for our club. We're looking forward to getting back at it tomorrow."

Minnesota took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission as junior Maryanne Menefee (Lansing, Mich.) scored the first goal of the game with 26.6 seconds remaining in the first period off a feed from senior Rachel Ramsey (Chanhassen, Minn.) and sophomore Lee Stecklein (Roseville, Minn.). The goal marked Menefee's third of the season.

The teams then combined for a five-goal second period as the Gophers extended their lead to 3-0 before OSU's Kuehl scored two quick goals on the power play just 14 seconds apart to make it 3-2. Bona extended Minnesota's lead back to two with her second goal of the season and third point of the game at the 11:44 mark of the period.

The Gophers also received second-period goals from Schipper, who scored her first goal of the season at the 2:39 mark to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead, and senior Meghan Lorence (Mounds View, Minn.). Minnesota held a 13-5 advantage in shots on goal in the middle frame.

The teams played a scoreless third period despite Minnesota holding a 19-5 advantage in shots on goal for the period and a 44-18 edge for the game. Junior Amanda Leveille (Kingston, Ont.) made 16 saves in her seventh win of the season (7-1-1).

The Gophers and Buckeyes wrap up this weekend's WCHA series at 1 p.m. CT Saturday afternoon at OSU Ice Rink.
