Winona, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Winona man blamed for a deadly wrong-way crash earlier this year has admitted to a felony charge stemming from the fatal incident.
36-year-old Adam Samuel Anderson today entered guilty pleas to a felony count of criminal vehicular homicide and a gross misdemeanor charge of criminal vehicular operation. He admitted to both charges using a Norgaard plea, which means he admits guilt but does not remember his actions due to impairment from alcohol or drugs. He is scheduled to be sentenced on November 9.
According to the criminal complaint in the case, Anderson was driving north in the southbound lanes of Highway 61 and Winona when his pickup crashed into a passenger car at the intersection with Highway 43. The February 19th collision caused the car to roll over into the ditch. One of the passengers in the car, 22-year-old Hannah Goman of Stevens Point Wisconsin, was ejected and suffered fatal injuries. The driver and another passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while Anderson and his passenger were not hurt.
A Winona police officer who responded to the crash and a witness reported detecting the strong odor of alcohol coming from Anderson's pickup. Other officers smelled alcohol on Anderson and noted his speech was slurred and he seemed disoriented.
Court records say Anderson refused to submit to a preliminary breath test at the scene and then refused to voluntarily submit a blood sample for testing when he arrived at the Winona hospital, "explaining it was against his religion to have his blood drawn because he was a Christian." A search warrant was eventually issued for a blood draw.
