Jury Convicts Mississippi Man for Brutal 2021 Rochester Christmas Eve Stabbing

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- An Olmsted County Jury has convicted a Mississippi man who was charged in connection with a Rochester stabbing that occurred in 2021.

22-year-old Trashun Haywood of Olive Branch, MS was charged with first and second-degree assault following the stabbing at an apartment complex in northwest Rochester on Christmas Eve of 2021. 

Haywood, who was 20 at the time, was accused of repeatedly stabbing a 26-year-old Rochester man with a pocket knife after the two men got into an argument.

The argument and stabbing occurred in the early morning hours of the holiday.

The court document indicates the victim suffered stab wounds to his neck, abdomen, and arm that required medical personnel at the St. Mary's Hospital Emergency Department to perform "life saving measures." 

Mississippi Man Convicted for Rochester Stabbing

Jury selection for Haywood’s trial began in Olmsted County Court on Monday. The jury received instructions from the judge on Thursday and returned the verdict that same day. 

The jurors returned guilty verdicts for first-degree assault and second-degree assault. Haywood has been ordered to be held without bail.

The maximum prison sentence for a first-degree assault conviction is 20 years and a prison sentence for a second-degree assault conviction can be as long as seven years. He’s scheduled to be sentenced next month.
