Austin, MN (KROC-AM News)- Interstate 90 in Austin will be closed for multiple days starting Friday night.

The closure and detour are related to a multi-year project that started this to replace six bridges along the interstate through Austin.

The interstate was intermittently closed last month to accommodate beam delivery and setting for one of the bridges being replaced.

A Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) news release says construction crews will now turn their attention to the 4th St. overpass. The interstate will close to accommodate demolition of the bridge on Friday.

I-90 to Close in Austin, MN at 7 p.m. Friday for 4th St. Bridge Demolition

Crews plan to close the ramps from westbound I-90 during the day to remove traffic signals. The ramps are set to reopen by 7 p.m. Friday, MnDOT says.

Westbound traffic will be detoured up the off ramp and returned to down to the interstate via the onramp.

Eastbound traffic will encounter a more elaborate detour during the closure. I-90 east traffic will be directed off the interstate at the Hwy. 105 interchange, which is west of the 4th St. overpass.

Motorists will then follow Hwy. 105 to County Rd. 28. From County Rd. 28 drivers will turn onto northbound Hwy. 218 on the eastern edge of Austin and follow the highway to the I-90 interchange.

MnDOT says the demolition and cleanup work is scheduled to be completed by Monday morning. Once the bridge is gone the westbound I-90 ramps at 4th street will close until 2025.

The eastbound ramps are scheduled to remain closed until later in December, when the eastbound Cedar River bridge east of the interchange is completed, MnDOT says.
