St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - After a lull that lasted about a week and a half, state officials announced Tuesday they had identified six new presumptive bird flu outbreaks in commercial flocks at farms in southern Minnesota.

Three of them are in Kandiyohi County, which has seen about a third of the outbreaks, while two were in Renville County and the sixth was found in Brown County. It is first time the H5N2 virus has been detected in Brown County.

There have now been 94 outbreaks detected in commercial turkey and chicken flocks located in 22 Minnesota counties involving over 8 million birds.

Some previously announced layoffs associated with the bird flu crisis took effect Tuesday at the Jennie-O Turkey Store plant in Faribault. Over 200 workers are being temporarily idled because supply chain disruptions caused by the avian flu outbreaks have forced the company to scale back production.
