I spend a good amount of time in two places in Rochester:

  1. Inside a radio studio at Townsquare Media in Downtown Rochester
  2. At Mayo Clinic

In other words, I see a lot of white walls, gray accents, and marble as I walk through the halls of Mayo Clinic to the Gonda building.  When a spark of color or piece of art breaks up the space, it is a moment that brings a smile to my face...especially when I have been looking at blank, gray walls all day.

Bright colors and paintings have appeared on utility boxes in several spots throughout the Med City as well.  One year, my kids posed for photos by these - it was a great backdrop!

Multiple sculptures can also be found throughout town - but one stands out a bit more than the rest - and everyone seems to have a different nickname for this piece of art.

Rochester Locals Share Their Nicknames For This Giant Stainless Steel Art in Rochester, Minnesota

Back in 2017, a 5,520 pound piece of art was installed just outside the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.  If you drive by this area, you can't miss it.  This display is 30 feet long, 15 feet high and is made out of stainless steel.

Artist Po Shu Wang created this piece and designed it to be more than just something for our community to look at.  This piece of art was born with the idea that we, the community, can interact with it.  Inside the Mayo Civic Center is a kiosk where you can add your words.  Whatever is shared on the keyboard is then turned into sounds and lights and displayed on the sculpture.

While we don't have any problems understanding how to interact with this piece of art, our community does seem to have different ideas on the names for this stainless steel display.
