Wisconsin Manhunt Update: Wanted Canton Man Captured in Rochester

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A manhunt that began in Wisconsin for a southeast Minnesota man ended in Rochester.

That’s according to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office in southwest Wisconsin. The ordeal involved a fleeing incident, high speed chase and a stolen dump truck.

 Authorities indicate the subject of the manhunt is being held in the Olmsted County Jail.

Wisconsin Law enforcement attempted to apprehend Nathan Gossman in the small town of Viroqua, which is about 33 miles southeast of La Crosse on Friday evening. 

The Canton man fled in a vehicle with a passenger as officers arrived, striking an officer during his escape, according to the Viroqua Police Department. It's unknown if the officer was injured. 

Gossman then stopped the fleeing vehicle and his passenger, identified as Jesse Devlaeminck of Rochester, got out and was apprehended on active warrants after a brief search, Viroqua police said.

Authorities said Gossman led law enforcement on a high-speed chase southwest of Viroqua before leaving the road near Retreat. 

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office says Gossman is believed to have stolen a dump truck belonging to Wheatland Township after he fled Viroqua police. 

Canton Man Wanted in Wisconsin Manhunt Captured in Rochester

Around 11:00 Monday morning, authorities reported recovering the missing dump truck in Rochester. 

At 7:45 p.m. the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office reported Gossman was arrested in Rochester. Details regarding his arrest are not available. 

Olmsted County Adult Detention Center records indicate Gossman was booked into the Olmsted County Jail around 6:40 Monday evening. Gossman is awaiting extradition back to Wisconsin. 

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office and Viroqua Police Department will be seeking charges through the Vernon County District Attorney, Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson said.
