Here's why you DON'T want to park your Kia or Hyundai in your garage right now if you live in Minnesota.

Actually, no matter WHERE you live-- whether it's here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, over in Wisconsin, down in Iowa or wherever-- you're being advised to NOT park your Kia or Hyundai in your garage right now.

It's all because of a manufacturing defect present in certain Kia and Hyundai models that could cause an electrical short, which could then cause the vehicle to catch fire.-- even if it's not running. That's not good, of course, but it's especially NOT good if your car is parked in the garage!

According to this NBC News story, both Kia and Hyundai have just announced a massive recall that is currently affecting nearly half a million cars. Specially, these are the models the recall involves:

Affected are certain Kia Sportage SUVs from 2014 through 2016, and the 2016 through 2018 K900 sedan. Recalled Hyundais include certain 2016 through 2018 Santa Fe SUVs, 2017 and 2018 Santa Fe Sports, the 2019 Santa Fe XL and 2014 and 2015 Tucson SUVs.

The story said the problem is in the antilock brake control module on those models, and that the issue has is already known to have caused 11 fires, though, thankfully, there haven't been any injuries.

Kia is in the process of sending letters out to affected owners, and will have them in the mail starting on April 5th with Hyundai starting to send letters to its affected owners on March 31st, the story said.

But you don't have to wait until you get a letter from Kia or Hyundai to see if your car is affected. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says owners can go www.nhtsa.gov and enter their 17-digit vehicle identification number to see if their automobile is being recalled.
