36-year-old Kelly Kocurek was found dead at a hotel in Hastings more than three years ago.
Her death was the result of strangulation, according to the criminal complaint.
Trial for Red Wing Man Accused of Fatally Strangling Woman in Hotel Room to Start Monday
35-year-old Kyle Williams was charged with first and second-degree murder in August of 2021, three months after Kcurek’s death.
The court document says Williams called 911 and claimed that Kcurek had strangled herself using cut cords that were found on the floor of the hotel room next to her body.
Investigators learned Kocurek had a pre-existing injury to her arm that limited the use of her hand and made it necessary for her to receive assistance in getting dressed and with other daily activities, the complaint says.
An autopsy found injuries inconsistent with self-inflicted wounds that were attributed to a physical assault, the charges say.
The proceedings against Williams have been delayed multiple times following psychological exams that found him incompetent to participate in the legal proceedings against him.
In June, a Dakota County Judge recently reviewed the results of another round of psychological testing and ruled Williams competent for trial.
