Wabasha, MN (KROC-AM News) - An elderly Lake City man will not be headed to prison for causing the death of a teenage skateboarder last year.

86-year-old Bernard Quist today was given a stayed 57-month prison term and was ordered to spend 180 days in jail for his conviction on a criminal vehicular homicide charge. The judge in the case instructed Quist to serve the jail term in 10-day increments each year on the anniversary of the death of 16-year-old Adriana Simon.

She was killed on August 31, 2021, when she was struck by a vehicle driven by Quist while she was crossing a road near Isaak Walton Park in Wabasha on a skateboard. A preliminary breath test administered after the deadly collision put Quist's blood-alcohol-concentration at .96

The criminal complaint says a witness told police an elderly man and a woman were at the scene but left before police arrived. A witness also told an investigator the elderly man was heard saying "she is gone" before the couple got into their vehicle and left.

The court document indicates Quist and his passenger later contacted Wabasha police and returned to the scene. The police report on the incident says Quist admitted to officers that he was driving the vehicle and that he had previously consumed several alcoholic beverages.

Quist entered a plea agreement in September and admitted to a criminal vehicular homicide charge. In exchange, prosecutors dropped two additional accounts of criminal vehicular homicide and a hit-and-run charge.
