Prosecutors Upgrade Charges in Lake City Knife Attack
Lake City, MN (KROC-AM News) - Prosecutors in Wabasha County have added attempted murder to the list of charges faced by a Lake City woman accused of stabbing a man in the chest last month.
Complaint Amended to Include Attempted Murder Charge
The amended criminal complaint against 29-year-old Katie Lee Miles now includes a charge of second-degree attempted murder. She was originally charged with first- and second-degree assault, along with a misdemeanor count of domestic assault, in connection with the incident during the early morning hours of June 22.
Police Originally Told Stabbing Was Accidental
The original criminal complaint says Lake City police responded to a medical emergency concerning a man who had cut his chest while doing the dishes. The court document stated that the responding officer was met by a juvenile, who told investigators that Miles and the victim had been arguing for several hours before he found the victim standing at the sink with a stab wound to his chest, Miles beside him, and a knife lying on the floor between them.
Victim Found With Deep Stab Wound
The charges stated that the officer found the man suffering from a deep stab wound. The victim told officers that he had accidentally cut his chest while doing the dishes by slipping on the kitchen rug in front of the sink and landing on the knife.
Revised Witness Statement
The amended criminal complaint includes a revised statement from the witness, who acknowledged that he initially told officers he did not actually see the stabbing. In his new statement to investigators, the juvenile said he witnessed Miles stab the victim in the upper chest.
Juvenile Witnessed Stabbing
He described being present while the couple was arguing and hearing Miles tell the victim, "I hate you," and, "I'm going to kill you." The witness stated that the victim responded by grabbing a large kitchen knife and handing it to Miles, who then "used her right hand, made an overhand motion, and stabbed the victim."
Victim Came Up With Accident Story
According to the complaint, Miles called 911, and it was the victim who told her to tell police that he accidentally stabbed himself after slipping and falling while washing dishes. The witness also stated that Miles later attempted to convince him to corroborate the false story and indicated she would buy him anything he wanted in exchange for his cooperation.
Miles remains in custody with her conditional bail set at $10,000.
