Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Make it six in a row for Mayo Clinic.

In its annual in-depth look at hospitals, US News and World Report has named Mayo Clinic-Rochester the top “Best Hospital” in the country for a sixth straight year.

According to the report:

U.S. News Best Hospitals honor roll recognizes 20 of the nation's highest performing hospitals across 15 specialties and 17 procedures and conditions. Over 5,000 hospitals are evaluated each year.

Ranked second this year was Cleveland Clinic and UCLA Medical Center was third, Johns Hopkins was 4th and Massachusetts General Hospital came in 5th. Mayo Clinic-Phoenix was ranked 15th.

Mayo has also been ranked the top hospital in Minnesota again, making it 12 straight years at the top of the list.

Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN is ranked No. 1 on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll. It is nationally ranked in 14 adult and 8 pediatric specialties and rated high performing in 1 adult specialty and 16 procedures and conditions. It is a general medical and surgical facility. It is a teaching hospital. The evaluation of Mayo Clinic also includes data from Mayo Clinic Hospital - Methodist Campus, Mayo Clinic Hospital - Saint Marys Campus and Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital. What became the Mayo Clinic was founded in 1889 in Rochester, Minnesota. The Mayo Clinic opened hospitals in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1986 and Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1987. The Mayo Clinic Health System was established in 1992 and owns 19 hospitals in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. The Mayo Clinic School of Medicine is the teaching arm of the Mayo Clinic. The hospital's two Rochester campuses include the Mayo Eugenio Litta Children’s Hospital. The Mayo Clinic has a large integrated transplantation program.

The Department of Endocrinology, which treats diabetes, is one of the world’s largest. The hospital offers a Healthy Living Program that is described as an “immersive wellness” experience, encompassing exercise, nutrition and mind-body practices. The Mayo Clinic’s Sports Medicine facilities in Rochester and Minneapolis serve athletes – from those at the elite level to the strictly recreational – with treatment and sports training. The Mayo Clinic has 57 research centers, such as those working on Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and kidney disease. Innovations at the Mayo Clinic include the heart-lung bypass machine and total hip replacement.

Mayo Clinic in Arizona has ranked No. 1 in that state for nine consecutive years and Mayo Clinic in Florida has ranked No. 1 in that state for five of the last six years.

The U.S. News & World Report "Best Hospitals" rankings feature 20 hospitals with the highest combined overall scores in 15 medical and surgical specialties, and 17 common procedures and conditions. Hospitals are measured on factors such as survival, experience, nurse staffing, advanced technology, patient services and reputation with other specialists. Hospitals also are ranked regionally within states and major metro areas.
