Many animals come and go through the doors of Paws and Claws Humane Society in Rochester, Minnesota. I'm lucky enough to be able to meet many of them because I'm a volunteer! Some of these animals have been at the shelter for a while, though, and are still eagerly awaiting their forever home.

Paws and Claws in particular has been around since 1974. They've since expanded a great deal and have a beautiful building by the RAC that most of their dogs and cats call their temporary home. Some of their animals are in foster homes or Rochester Animal Control but most are housed at the main building.

Long-Term Dogs at Paws and Claws

There are 6 dogs currently up for adoption at Paws and Claws who are considered long-term residents.

Most of the dogs up for adoption at Paws and Claws right now have arrived between the end of November and last week. However, these 6 pups have been there longer than that. A couple since June of last year, some since the fall.

Pepper is the most recent arrival of the long-term residents. He came to Paws and Claws on October 23rd, 2023.

They're guessing he's an American Blue Heeler mixed with a bunch of other stuff. He's just over a year and a half old and was found as a stray. He's very friendly with people, including kids, but with other dogs he can be picky. His forever family will need to work on training with him so he can learn basic commands but also they need to be able to work on socializing him properly. He would not do well with cats in the house.

Next, we have Jill, who arrived at Paws and Claws on October 3rd, 2023.

Jill had eight adorable puppies after arriving at Paws and Claws and now she's ready for a home just for her. She's a terrier/ English Staffordshire mix and is just over 3 years old. They say right away she's a little shy but then warms up. At the foster home she was in with her puppies she lived with other dogs. The only thing to keep in mind is they say she teased the smaller dogs so no dogs smaller than her and probably no cats. Her foster parent also says she loves to snuggle.

Ivy arrived at Paws and Claws on September 27th, 2023.

They say she's a shepherd mix who is about 1 year, 5 months old. She's shy at first but warms up quickly and is very friendly. She's good with other dogs as well. However, she is heartworm positive. No worries, though, because Paws and Claws is taking care of the treatments. Even if she's adopted before her treatments are over Paws and Claws will continue to cover the cost.

Jax also arrived at Paws and Claws on September 27th, 2023.

They are guessing that he's a chow chow, terrier, American pit bull mix who is just approaching his 1st birthday. Jax is currently at a foster home because he needs some confidence. Therefore, they're hoping for a family to adopt him who already has a dog, one who can show Jax the ropes. They say once he warms up he's "a sweet and sensitive soul".

And finally we have the longest term residents at Paws and Claws right now.

Mary arrived at the shelter on June 7th, 2023.

She's a terrier/American pit bull mix who is 8 years old. She's very sweet, loves attention, and knows her basic commands. They say she cannot have cats in her adoptive home. Another thing her forever family needs to know is that she has slightly diminished vision and "an exaggerated gait when she's excited and walking quickly. She gets around well overall, but can be a bit clumsy." When I've walked her I've had no issues.

And Mazi also arrived at Paws and Claws on June 7th, 2023.

Look at those floppy ears! She's a terrier/pit bull mix who is just over 3 and a half years old. She's a little shy but then is a big sweetheart once she knows you and will gift you with lots of cuddles and tail wags. She just needs a family who will give her time to feel comfortable and also probably some training. They mention in her bio that her home cannot have kids under 12. A lot of the time that's because they're dogs who don't know how to control their excitement and can knock a kid over easily. I'm not saying that if you have young kids you should adopt her. I'm just saying that whoever does adopt her should be aware of that possibility.

Let's find these adorable hounds a forever home!
