To pinpoint the safest places to live, WalletHub analyzed all 50 states using 52 key safety metrics across five categories - everything from assault rates and climate disaster losses per capita to the unemployment rate, giving a well-rounded picture of where Americans feel most secure.

The top three safest states in America:
Maine ranks third in large part because of the financial safety and the lowest unemployment rate in the country. There's also a very low level of crime in the state and many Maine residents work in professions that keep people safe.
New Hampshire came in second place mainly because it has very little violence. A high percentage of residents feel safe and the state also enjoys financial safety with a low 2.9% unemployment rate.
Topping the list as the safest state in the nation is Vermont. According to WalletHub, Vermont is especially good when it comes to neighborhood safety with nearly 77% of parents in Vermont saying they believe they live in safe neighborhoods. They also excel in financial safety and have safe roads.

Minnesota ranked impressively in several key areas: 2nd in road safety, 6th in workplace safety, and 9th in financial safety, earning it the spot as the 8th safest state overall.
