Here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, we love our outdoors, right? So when a big outdoor retailer announces that it is closing its location in Minnesota and moving out of state, it stings.

One of the many great things about living here in the North Star State is the incredible opportunity we have to enjoy the great outdoors, sometimes, literally right in our own backyards.

And doing just that is very popular here in Minnesota. Take fishing, for instance. Nearly 1.4 million Minnesotans purchase fishing licenses every year, making it one of the most popular outdoor activities in the state. Fishing is responsible for supplying Minnesota with an economic impact of over $4.4 billion, according to Fishing Tackle Retailer, a fishing industry site.

Hiking, biking, camping, and other water sports are also incredibly popular here in the Bold North during our warm months, while ice fishers and other outdoor fans also brave the winter elements to get outside even when it's cold.

So, yeah, it kind of hurt our state pride when outdoor retailer The Sportsman's Guide announced it was closing its warehouse and distribution facility in South St. Paul and moving out of state. It's planning on consolidating its operations later this year at a facility in Greenfield, Indiana, near Indianapolis.

According to this Pioneer Press (via Yahoo Finance) story, word dropped earlier this week about the closing:

The parent company of Sportsman’s Guide announced Monday that the South St. Paul distribution facility will close, eliminating the positions of 57 employees.

Until this move, the Sportsman's Guide said it had considered Minnesota its home for several decades. Their website notes that 'We’re right in your neck of the woods. Our headquarters is located in South St. Paul, Minnesota, near the shores of the mighty Mississippi, and we’ve been here for more than 40 years,' it said.

This KSTP-TV story went on to say that those jobs are set to be eliminated in July. This isn't the first Sportsman's Guide closing to affect Minnesota, however. This thread on Reddit notes that the retail store at its distribution facility in South St. Paul had previously closed back in June 2024.

And while its location is closing here in Minnesota, the brand itself isn't going away; the Sportsman's Guide is still very much active as an online retailer. Of course, this isn't the case for many stores these days. Keep scrolling to check out 50 beloved retail chains that no longer exist.
