Minnesota To Get Its Largest IMAX Screen Yet This December
Get ready to see movies on a whole new scale this winter. Minnesota’s biggest IMAX theater is gearing up to open in December, promising an immersive, larger-than-life experience that will make every blockbuster feel epic.
Word that a movie theater chain is *opening* a new location is big news these days. Here in Minnesota, along with the rest of the country, we're more used to hearing the news that theaters are closing, right? It wasn't that long ago that the CMX movie theatre chain made that announcement that it was closing all of its locations in in Minnesota-- in both Rochester and Burnsville, which included the CMX Odyssey IMAX.
Minnesota Moviegoers Finally Get Some Good News
However, the fact that movie theaters are closing permanently in 2025 probably shouldn't be a surprise. As home streaming and on-demand viewing, and binge-watching become more and more popular, the movie theater business has seen its share of challenges.
But there are still a lot of movie theaters in business here in Minnesota. In fact, according to Poidata, there are 197 movie theaters currently operating in the Bold North. But that number is about to get bigger.

Emagine Lakeville to Feature Minnesota’s Largest IMAX Screen
Because there's set to be one more, and this one will be the biggest screen in the state. That's the word from BringMeTheNews, which reported earlier this week that Emagine Entertainment would be opening the largest IMAX screen in the North Star State at its Emagine Lakeville location.
According to the Emagine Entertainment website, in addition to locations in Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Colorado, the company operates several theatres at the following locations in Minnesota:
- Delano
- Eagan
- East Bethel
- Lakeville
- Monticello
- Rogers
- Waconia
- White Bear
- Willow Creek
Opening in Time for Avatar: Fire and Ash This December
The new IMAX screen going in at the Emagine Lakeville location will be state-of-the-art, with '4K last projections and multichannel sound,' BringMeTheNews said, noting that its massive screen will measure 64 feet wide by 36-feet, 6-inches tall.
It's set to open in mid-December of 2025, in time for the release of the new James Cameron movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, which will be its first feature.
And while this is good news about a business opening, we know that's not necessarily the norm, as business closings here in Minnesota and around the country aren't a new phenomenon. Keep scrolling to check out 50 beloved retail chains that also closed their doors and aren't around anymore.
