MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) — A 21-year-old woman will spend a month in jail for a crash that killed a motorcyclist in western Minnesota.

Sarah Jo Braith of Buffalo, Minnesota, was sentenced Monday in Clay County court.

A State Patrol investigation found Braith sent and received hundreds of text messages before she hit two motorcycles on Aug. 30, 2014, killing one of the riders.

A jury acquitted Braith of felony criminal vehicular homicide in February and instead convicted her of careless driving in the death of 48-year-old Angela Pangelinan of Moorhead.

County Attorney Brian Melton said Braith's actions cost Pangelinan her life. The defense contended she was not texting at the moment of impact.

Braith also was ordered to pay nearly $50,000 in restitution to the Pangelinan family.
