Apple Valley, MN (KROC News) -  Despite cool and wet weather, thousands of visitors turned out for the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular event at the Minnesota Zoo during the final weekend in October.

Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular event at the Minnesota Zoo 2018

It was the first time the zoo offered the event that included thousands of carved pumpkins of all sizes and displays.  Some were incredibly artistic.

Visitors walked on designated trails to view the displays. One stretch of a trail included carvings representing the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Bob Dylan, Prince and the Vikings were included in the carvings as well as a moving clock complete with chimes.

The event will end Oct 31st but will more than likely return next year.

Here’s more on the event from the Minnesota Zoo’s website.

How many pumpkins are there?                                                                                      There are about 5,000 pumpkins on display all lit with LED lights.

Who carves the pumpkins?
Passion for Pumpkins from Oxford, MA designs the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, and carves the over 5,000 illuminated pumpkins you see on the Trail. Founded by John Reckner, Passion for Pumpkins is a professional multi-media company run by the Reckner family and close friends. Passion for Pumpkins produces shows around the country.

How do they keep the pumpkins in good shape for this long of an event?
They keep carving and enhancing the displays throughout the life of the show. The carvers expect to go through about 20,000 pumpkins during the course of the 28-night run.

What happens to the proceeds from the event?
Proceeds from the event will support the Zoo’s animal care, environmental education, and conservation efforts both locally and around the globe.
