Police in Detroit Lakes arrested the DFL lawmaker when they discovered her in the basement of her stepmother's home in April of 2024, the criminal complaint in the case says.

The Woodbury woman was dressed in all black clothing and wearing a black hat. She also had a flashlight that had a black sock covering it—an apparent modification to limit the amount of light it emitted, the charges say.

Once in custody, Mitchell told the officers that she was trying to retrieve a couple of her late father's belongings because her stepmother would no longer speak with her, the court document says.

Mitchell’s trial start date was originally scheduled to start in January, but was pushed back to June 16 after the judge granted a motion from the defense to delay the proceedings.

The new start date for jury selection for the trial is July 14.
