Olmsted County Seeks Proposal for Home Owned by Charlie Mayo
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Olmsted County wants to hear from anyone interested in restoring or redeveloping a historic property once owned by Doctor Charles Mayo. The county is soliciting proposals for the future of the Biermann house, which is on 1.3 acres of land across the street from the Mayowood mansion in rural Southwest Rochester.
The house is also known as the Mayowood Gatehouse and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s believed it was built around 1865 and was owned by Doctor Charles Mayo and his family from 1907 until 1969.
The home, along with over 70 acres of land, was purchased by Olmsted County in 1979 with the intent of creating a larger park corridor. Those plans did not move forward and over the years the home has deteriorated and will need extensive repairs.
In soliciting proposals, Olmsted County is indicating it will consider responses from groups, organizations, business people, community members, or anyone interested in restoring the property. The county will also consider other options for the redevelopment of the parcel.
