Red Wing, MN (KROC AM News) – Attempted murder charges have been filed against the suspect who was arrested Tuesday in the shooting of a Rochester teenager in Red Wing.

According to the criminal complaint, John Smith was shot while in the back seat of a car. The bullet went through the right side of his neck and he was taken to St. Marys Hospital where he was treated for the non-life threatening injury.

Smith - who turned 19 the next day - was in the car with three other people when it stopped at a residence where the suspect lives around 2:30 AM. Two of the people went inside.

A short while later, Smith said he heard two gunshots and was hit by a bullet. He and the other person in the car got out and ran. A responding officer spotted them and called an ambulance.

The shooting suspect was later taken into custody. He has been identified as 18-year-old John Roberts. It’s not known why he fired at the vehicle. Bail for Roberts has been set at $500,000.
