The surprise, early Sunday morning attack by Japanese warplanes killed about 2400 service members and nearly annihilated the U.S. Pacific fleet. To mark the 73rd anniversary of the attack, Dayton has ordered all U.S. and Minnesota flags at federal and state government buildings be flown at half-staff Sunday from sunrise to sunset.

He has also issued a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day proclamation.

Some Minnesota sailors played a significant role in the Pearl Harbor attack - but their messages were apparently never received. Had they been read, the outcome of the attack may have been different.  Read more in this account of Minnesota's official 2013 Pearl Harbor event.
