Rochester, MN  (KROC AM News) -  The Rochester City Council is scheduled to vote next week on the 2016 preliminary property tax levy and based on what was said at Monday’s meeting, there could be an increase of 7 to 8 percent.

Council President Randy Staver suggested a 7 percent hike, which would increase tax collections by around $1 million. That would be enough to pay for ten new positions being recommended by City Administrator Steve Kvenvold.

Some council members suggested an 8 percent increase. That would bring in another million dollars and the money would be put into the city’s street maintenance budget, which is nearly depleted.

The council will adopt the formal property tax levy in December and the figure can be lower but not higher than the amount that will be voted on next Monday.

Local taxpayers will also find out Tuesday what their 2016 county property taxes may be. The Olmsted County Board is scheduled to set its 2016 preliminary levy during its afternoon meeting.
