Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -The Rochester City Council has approved a request from the University of Minnesota-Rochester to use up to $3.1-million in sales tax funds to purchase the VFW site along 6th St SW.

UMR has a long term plan to build a campus in the area south of 6th St and between Broadway and Soldiers Field Park.

The VFW purchase includes its club and a small building that once housed a very popular root beer stand. UMR wants the site cleared before it takes ownership, meaning both buildings would be demolished.

Before Monday night’s vote, the council heard from Nancy Slocum who has hopes of saving the small building, perhaps by relocating it. Fourth ward council member Mark Bilderback suggested Slocum talk to UMR and the VFW.

The building is not on the city’s list of historic or protected properties.
