Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) -  The Rochester man who was severely wounded in a police shooting in northern Minnesota last year has entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors in St. Louis County and is scheduled to be sentenced next month.

Court records show 25-year-old Che Jones entered Norgaard pleas to first and second-degree assault charges, along with a count for being an ineligible person in possession of a gun. The plea means Jones admits his guilt, but cannot remember committing the crime because of intoxication or other impairment. The prosecutor in the case noted lab tests put Jones’ blood-alcohol-concentration at .3 following the shooting in January of last year.

The criminal complaint says Hibbing Police responded to reports of an altercation outside a home in the Iron Range city in the early afternoon on January 13, 2017, and came upon Jones standing next to the victim of an assault holding a gun. He took off running and the officers pursued him into an alley, where he was accused of firing his gun in the direction of the officers after he fell to the ground. The officers then opened fire and several bullets struck Jones in the chest, cheek, and arm.

He was initially listed in critical condition after the shooting and spent several months recuperating in the hospital before he was formally charged in the case last July.

A judge later dismissed attempted murder and 1st-degree assault charges, ruling there was no evidence that Jones had actually fired at the officers.

His sentencing hearing in St. Louis County Court is scheduled on June 21st.
